Development and Evaluation of Online Estimation Methods for a Feedback-Based Freeway Ramp Metering Strategy

چکیده
The critical density of a freeway link is subject to changes over time owing to such circumstances as environmental conditions (snow, rain, etc.) and traffic incidents. Because of the critical density’s impacts on the performance of some ramp metering strategies that make use of it as a threshold value for control action, it is necessary to trace the real value of the critical density. Hence, methodologies for the online estimation of critical density using the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and Kalman filter (KF) are proposed in this paper. Basically, critical density is chosen as the state variable to be determined using the system output, namely the measurement of traffic flow on the downstream freeway link. These methods are compared with a similar methodology by Smaragdis et al. (2004) using the same traffic conditions implemented in a macroscopic simulation model based on MATLAB. Then, these proposed methods are evaluated in microscopic simulation environments using PARAMICS. In tracing timedependent changes of real critical occupancy effectively, the results indicate that both methods (using KF and EKF) provide better performance compared with the case where constant critical occupancy is used for all the scenarios tested. Our paper contributes to state of the art by using a novel on-line parameter estimation techniques combined with two different feedback based ramp metering strategies namely ALINEA and MIXCROS and then by testing this new approach in a highly stochastic microscopic simulation environment that can be considered a close representation of real-world conditions. Modeling and PARAMICS Based Evaluation of New Local Freeway Ramp-Metering Strategy that Takes Ramp Queues into Account
One of the major criticisms of ramp-metering has been the delay caused on the ramps because of the queues created by ramp control strategies. However, recently, several researchers proposed strategies that explicitly take into account ramp queues when determining metering rates. In this paper, an isolated “feedback” based ramp-metering strategy using modeling is presented. In addition to the re...
متن کاملComparing Methods of Ramp Metering for On-Ramps to Improve the Operational Conditions at Peak Hours
This paper aims to evaluate and compare the effects of different methods of ramp metering on the operational conditions of traffic flow at three levels: the network level (including the freeway and its connected ramps), the entrance ramp, and the upstream segment of the entrance. To achieve this aim, one of the most important urban freeways in the metropolis of Isfahan was selected. The traffic...

The recently developed traffic-responsive feedback control strategy HERO (HEuristic Ramp metering cOordination), that coordinates local ramp-metering actions in freeway networks, was implemented at the M1/M3 Freeway in Queensland, Australia. HERO employs an extended version of the feedback regulator ALINEA at the local level. HERO outperforms uncoordinated local ramp metering and approaches the...
متن کاملDevelopment of A Simulation Laboratory for Evaluating Ramp Metering Algorithms
As an efficient traffic control strategy to ameliorate freeway traffic congestion, ramp metering has been successfully applied in the US. However, the applicability and effectiveness of a ramp-metering strategy are required to be investigated during the preimplementation phase in order to ensure the success of the implementation. The use of traffic simulation models can provide a quick and cost...
متن کاملEvaluation and Improvement of the Stratified Ramp Metering Algorithm Through Microscopic Simulation - Phase II
A new ramp metering strategy implemented on the Twin Cities freeway system to reduce ramp waiting times was evaluated through microsimulation of freeway activity. The study compared Stratified Ramp Metering strategy with the previous Zone Metering Strategy and with no control strategy. Comparison with Zone, which was designed to favor freeway flow, showed the new strategy succeeded in greatly r...
